Stuck in the 'office to home' and 'home to office' loop? Me too. And it was a problem I didn't even know I had until a lecturer showed our class a video of a stunning paradise in the Philippines called Palawan.

He was giving a lecture on the concept of The Third Place—a space outside of home (your first place) and work or school (your second place) where you can relax and truly be yourself. Think of it as your ultimate chill zone. A coffee shop, a community garden, a gym, or maybe even a place you go on vacation.

The idea was coined by US sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book, The Great Good Place, and he described it as a crucial part of a balanced life.

Then, he asked us: "What's your third place?"

I froze. I honestly couldn't remember the last time I went on a real vacation or took a break from the daily grind. My life was all about that loop. I thought about the concerts I've attended, basketball warm-ups, and a few events outside Nairobi, but one place kept coming to mind.

It was Naivasha. More specifically, Hell's Gate National Park. It's the perfect day trip from the capital, where you can mountain bike, rock climb, and relax in a natural spa while surrounded by incredible wildlife. I've been there several times, especially when showing visiting friends the beauty of my homeland. After that thought, I smiled. Yep, Naivasha it is. My home away from home.

This class was a wake-up call. I realized how important it is to schedule my third place for my own mental wellness. It’s my chance to recharge, reconnect, and reflect.

I've made a vow to use this space well—to have fun either by myself or with friends as I connect with and reflect on my dreams. We all deserve a rebirth of some sort, and this is one of them.

“A calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that’s very important for good health.”

– Dalai Lama
